Clinical Shadowing & Mentorship Program

Clinical Shadowing & Mentorship Program

Program intiated in 2019.

Program Description

The Clinical Shadowing and Mentorship Program (CSMP) is a nationwide enrichment program serving associate premedical members (MAPS) of the SNMA. The program seeks to address and overcome the systematic barriers that interfere with the medical school acceptance rate of underrepresented minorities, especially those of color. In support, the enrichment program will provide several virtual clinical shadowing hours of medical exposure, professional development training, research experience, and most importantly a mentee-mentorship to each participating pre-medical student.

All About CSMP

CSMP Summary

Considering the COVID-19 pandemic, many hospitals banned pre-medical students from shadowing or volunteering in a clinical setting. As a result, this created a lack of experience and education that would further divide the growing population of diversity in medicine; therefore, reducing the number of diversified medical school applicants. Subsequently, highlighting healthcare inadequacies across the United States of America–accentuating systemic injustice and the growing disparities amongst marginalized communities and vulnerable populations, that include people of color. For this reason, the SNMA–Kaiser Permanente Fellow and Medical School Graduate decided to create a pathway that would bridge higher education and mentorship to support underrepresented minorities in their pursuit of a career in medicine. In 2021, the Clinical Shadowing & Mentorship Program (CSMP) started a nationwide initiative with a comprehensive approach in targeting cultural competence in healthcare at the root–namely medical education. The SNMA's partnership with Kaiser Permanente of Northern California continues to support the SNMA-Kaiser Fellow in advocating for minorities of racial and ethnic disparities through the CSMP enrichment program.

Moreover, the CSMP enrichment program focuses on recognizing resolutions that can cease the barriers associated with these communities; obstacles that often make it difficult to seek knowledge and experience through clinical shadowing and science related research. All qualified applicants will participate in several professional development training workshops that are accompanied by numerous supportive virtual clinical shadowing experiences and interesting case-based studies in medicine. In addition, a one-on-one peer mentorship with a board-certified physician or a current medical student will be assigned to all participants in support of their learning process. CSMP is a wonderful and beneficial opportunity that will help prepare minorities in becoming a strong medical school applicant and a clinically excellent, culturally competent, and socially conscious future physician.
