WCJ Research Forum info in Announcements

Abstract Submission Link: Coming November 2020

We serve as the research assessment committee to further the work efforts of the SNMA in addressing the need for increased support for and investment in underrepresented minority premedical students, medical students and future physicians. In particular, this committee is dedicated to increasing the amount of research specifically reflecting the experiences and concerns of minority medical students, while contributing important data with which to strengthen arguments to support the need to achieve racial parity in the physician workforce.

OBJECTIVES

  1. Assist all Committees in the tracking and data collection of chapter activities and participants, including but not limited to community service protocols, academic enrichment activities, policy education, voter registration, and membership benefit use.
  2. Assist any officer or Committee with the creation, distribution, and collection of surveys on any topic of interest in order to gather member opinion on specified goals, events, and/or strategies.
  3. Investigate and increase membership awareness of academic medicine and health care research programs and grant opportunities.
  4. Develop and implement the longitudinal plan and implementation of the SNMA/David E. Satcher MD PhD Research Fellowship.
  5. Assist the National Vice-President with the Annual Dr. Wilbert C. Jordan Research Forum at the National Medical Education Conference and subsequent publication of the winning abstracts in the Journal of the Student National Medical Association.
  6. Assist past national officers in the further completion of the Obstacles and Opportunities Initiative.

NATIONAL DRC COMMITTEE GOALS

  • The Diversity Research Committee (DRC) serves as the research assessment committee to further the work efforts of the SNMA in addressing the need for increased support and investment in underrepresented minority premedical students, medical students, and future physicians. In particular, the DRC is dedicated to increasing the amount of research that reflects the experiences and concerns of minority medical students. This is done by contributing important data to strengthen justification for racial parity in the physician workforce. Additionally, this committee works cooperatively with the Physician Researcher Initiative Fellow and is charged with the oversight of two of SNMA's longstanding research programs:

    • Dr. Wilbert C. Jordan Research Forum
    • Dr. David E. Satcher, MD, PhD Research Fellowship

    DRC NATIONAL COMMITTEES

    • Dr. David E. Satcher, MD, PhD Fellowship
      • Subcommittee chair: Christopher D. George
      • Purpose: The SNMA Satcher fellowship aims to provide medical student members of the SNMA with opportunities to explore racial and ethnic health disparities in a research environment. The SNMA David Satcher, MD, PhD Research Fellowship consists of $2,000-$5,000 fellowship prizes for research focusing on obesity prevention and obesity intervention.

    • Dr. Wilbert C. Jordan Research Forum (WCJRF)
      • Subcommittee chair: Marae Thompson and Oghale Obaro-Best
      • Purpose: The research forum was introduced as part of the SNMA Annual Medical Education program 20 years ago as a means of extending an opportunity to SNMA members to display their scientific competence and to award them for their academic and research accomplishments. The Research Forum is open to all SNMA student members who have completed research prior to or during medical school. Participants must submit abstracts of their work and prepare a display for presentation during the SNMA Annual Medical Education Conference. For the purpose of judging, all research is divided into Basic Science, Clinical Science, Social Science, and Obesity or Health Complications of Obesity categories.

    • National Leadership Institute (NLI)
      • Subcommittee chairs:
      • Purpose: Occurs 3 times per year in conjunction with the Board of Directors Meetings. SNMA and MAPS (Minority Association of Pre-medical Students) members from all parts of the country gather for a weekend of educational workshops on leadership training, organizational advancement, and project development. During each session, educational tracks are crafted specifically for board members, regional and chapter members at large, and for pre-medical students.

    • Physician Research Initiative (PRI) Fellow
      • Subcommittee chair: Moje Omoruan and Iyesogie Ojo
      • Purpose: PRI seeks to educate the SNMA membership about careers in academic medicine and to establish a network of mentors in addition to mentoring opportunities that will initiate and enhance students' research experiences.

    • Resources
      • Subcommittee chair: Lindsey Ayanruoh and Angelique Woods
      • Purpose: Database of scholarships, grants, conferences, fellowships for medical students and research opportunities to undergraduates

    • Medical Scientist Training (MD/PhD) Program
      • Subcommittee Chair: Quenton Bubb and Mytien Nguyen
      • Purpose: The purpose of the subcommittee will be to formally integrate the MD/PhD students into SNMA operations. It will address the concerns and needs of MD/PhD members, educate medical and undergraduate students about MD/PhD programs, and provide a networking and mentoring opportunities. The first agenda will be to compile a database of current MD/PhD candidates per institution in the country and formalize networking opportunities between the candidates.
