Region I

Welcome to the Mighty Region I !!!

My name is Emmanuel Agu and I am the Region 1 Regional Director, responsible for assisting the SNMA National Office and local chapters in carrying out the mission of the SNMA. On behalf of the 24 Student National Medical Association (SNMA) chapters in California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Utah, Hawaii, and Arizona, welcome to Region I!

In the 60 years since its founding, the SNMA has played a significant role promoting the themes of mutual support for medical students of color and advocating for the transformation of medical teaching to include cultural sensitivity training. In addition, the organizations’ focus on community service efforts, fulfills its aim not only to nurture and support the academic enrichment of its medical student members, but also to serve communities in a very real and proactive way. All of these actions coincide with the Mission of SNMA which is “supporting current and future underrepresented minority medical students, addressing the needs of under-served communities, and increasing the number of clinically excellent, culturally competent and socially conscious physicians.”

Region 1 is large and diverse, with chapters across ten states on and around the west coast. Each chapter does outstanding work on their respective campuses. The Regional leadership supports each chapter though encouraging collaboration between regional schools and other underrepresented-in-medicine organizations, providing funding for traveling to SNMA business both on the regional and national level, and fostering of advocacy efforts that promote well-being of constituents. Also, by expanding our online presence and recruiting new MAPS and local chapters, we will continue to build and strengthen our region.

My personal goal is to engage in establishing partnerships that will foster the development of the scholars in Region 1. If you have any questions or would like to support, free to contact me at region1director@snma.org.

Yours in SNMA,

About Our Region

SNMA is made up of 10 regions around the country. An elected Regional Director oversees each region. Regional Boards are mainly comprised of the following elected regional officers: Regional Director, Associate Regional Director, Pre-Medical Liaison, Secretary, Treasurer, and Committee Chairs (corresponding to national committees). Each region hosts an annual Regional Conference at which a regional meeting is held. Each region has its own Constitution and Bylaws, which must be held in accordance with and not in violation of the Constitution and Bylaws of National SNMA. Region I is comprised of chapters from California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Montana, Utah, Idaho, Hawaii, and Alaska.
